Alumni Spotlight

Name:
Kamaria Washington

What high school do you attend?
Cranbrook (9th grade)

Personal information (married, children, hobbies, interests):
Presently my passions are attending church, modern dance or just curling up on a rainy day with a teen fiction book.

In the future I plan on becoming a Pediatrician.

What year did you graduate from Cornerstone?
I graduated from Cornerstone in 2009.

In what grade did you start at Cornerstone?
I started my journey at Cornerstone in 2006 as a 6th grader.

If you know, why did your family choose Cornerstone?
My family chose Cornerstone because of their reputation of educational excellence and the fact that it was a Christ-centered school.

Who was your favorite teacher/staff member & why?
My favorite teacher was and still is Mr. O’Connor. I am thankful to him because he challenged me academically as well as spiritually. Mr. O’Connor knew I excelled in math and would routinely give me extra assignments to make sure I never settled for just being average. I loved that! After graduating, Mr. O’Connor challenged me yet again by inviting me to speak at a few of his religious classes about my relationship with Christ. I was nervous at first, but still accepted the challenge. From that, I have since grown in my ability to tell others about Christ.

What did you learn at Cornerstone that you will never forget?
I learned to give all I’ve got, even when I am at the top of the class. Never do just enough to get by.

What is one memorable experience you had at Cornerstone?
One memorable experience I had was on my last school day at Cornerstone. We didn’t have anything to do in class, yet everyone actually showed up. My friends and I cried and laughed together a lot that day.

What element of the Cornerstone education is most important to you & (perhaps) still informs your life/decisions today?
The most important thing about Cornerstone to me is the fact that it is a Christian community. School had a family atmosphere and parents were proud that their children were growing academically and spiritually.

How did the Partner program affect your life?
The Partner program assured me that there were others in the world that cared about my academic future. This made me strive to do better. My partner, Rick Reid, was with me every step of the way. And when he couldn’t make it to an event, he would let me know beforehand as to not disappoint me. I still maintain a relationship with him via e-mail and intend on inviting him to my graduation from Cranbrook.

What do you want people to know about Cornerstone?
I want people to know how great of an opportunity Cornerstone is and how greatly this community can change their lives whether they are a student, a parent, or looking to be a staff member.

Why should others be involved in what Cornerstone does?
Others should be involved in what Cornerstone does because they will not only be helping children academically, but also spiritually. What more could one want?
