The statistics have been widely shared but they bear repeating: Nationwide, only 33% of fourth graders are reading at proficient levels. In Detroit, the data is even more bleak as it’s been reported that children here face more challenges than most urban cities – higher rates of child poverty and school absenteeism – that contribute to even lower success rates.
Cornerstone Schools is addressing this crisis but we need your help!
THE CORNERSTONE APPROACH
Using a research-based approach to reading, writing, and spelling with an emphasis on our youngest students – those in kindergarten through 3rd grade – we’re positioned to make the greatest impact. We’ve seen results in other urban areas that prove phonics programs can be undeniably successful. And while 30 states have agreed that requiring phonics instruction is key to addressing inadequate reading scores – with many overhauling how reading is taught and funded – Michigan is not yet one of them. But we can’t wait for anyone to intervene.
We are optimistic that with your help we can tackle the problem.
