The energy builds, the crowd leans in, and a team of students takes the mat—focused, fearless, and ready. For many Cornerstone athletes, this moment at the first-ever Complete Life Cheer Competition wasn’t just about hitting a routine. It was about discovering confidence, pushing past nerves, and realizing just how much they’re capable of.

This milestone event brought together Junior Varsity and Varsity teams from Jefferson-Douglass Academy, Adams-Young Elementary & Middle Schools, Madison-Carver Academy, and Washington-Parks Academy. Designed to mirror official competitions and judged by representatives from the MHSAA, the experience introduced many students to competitive cheer for the very first time, opening the door to a new level of athletic and personal growth.

And make no mistake – cheerleading is athletic. “Some may question the word ‘athlete’ when it comes to cheer, but the athleticism is real,” shared MCA’s Coach Kaia. “Our girls are learning skills like cartwheels, toe touches, and splits—often improving far beyond where they started. Cornerstone is offering the full spectrum of cheerleading, from sideline to competitive, giving our students a real opportunity to grow in this sport.”

But what’s happening goes far beyond physical skills. Competitive cheer is shaping habits and mindsets that stay with students long after the routine ends. “A good athlete practices until they get it right. A great athlete practices until they never get it wrong,” said Coach Nelson of WPA—a message that captures the discipline and commitment being built across the program.

That discipline shows up in every aspect of a student’s life. “Competitive cheer gives our young athletes a space to grow, learn teamwork, and build confidence while contributing to school spirit,” said Coach Raven, Head JV Cheer Coach at JDA. “They develop resilience, accountability, and lasting bonds as they work toward shared goals.”

Athletes are learning how to rely on one another in high-pressure moments, communicate clearly, and push through challenges together. As Coach Nelson explained, those experiences create something deeper: a sense of belonging and purpose. Students take pride in representing their schools, knowing their presence matters—not just at competitions, but in building school culture day in and day out.

That sense of responsibility carries into the classroom as well. “This is a highly disciplined sport, and our girls are rising to meet that challenge,” said JDA Assistant JV Coach Holcomb. “They understand commitment, they support one another, and they know academics come first. We’re seeing success both in competition and in strong GPAs.”

The competition itself also offered something powerful for younger athletes: a vision for the future. A high-energy performance by the Lincoln-King High School Competition Cheer Team brought the crowd to its feet and showed middle school students what’s possible with dedication, practice, and perseverance.

And that preparation is already translating into real results. Cornerstone teams recently competed in the Detroit PAL School Cheer Competition against schools from across the city, with JDA earning a third-place finish in the JV Division. More importantly, students walked away with a deeper understanding of sportsmanship, commitment, and what it takes to improve.

For MCA fifth grader Kaiden D., the experience captured exactly what the program is all about. “I think it’s fun—we have a great team! I like learning and performing cheers,” she said. “The competition was a fun experience… I would do it again!”

That combination of joy and growth is at the heart of Cornerstone’s cheer program. Students are not only building strength and skill—they’re building confidence, character, and connections that last.

Looking ahead, the vision is clear: continue expanding opportunities, strengthening skills, and building a program rooted in teamwork, leadership, and school pride. As Coach Nelson shared, the goal is not just to compete—but to develop student-athletes who carry discipline, resilience, and a commitment to excellence into every area of their lives.

Because at Cornerstone, cheer isn’t just about what happens on the mat—it’s about who students become because of it.
