“When my mom asked what I wanted to do to make my own money, I told her I wanted to be an author because I love to read – and I want others to love it too.”
With those words, Jefferson-Douglass Academy student George Lathem IV set out on an incredible journey – one that led him to publish his first book at just six years old.
In 2021, George debuted I Can Be, a coloring and activity book designed to inspire children ages 4-7 to dream big and believe in themselves. He quickly followed up with I Can Be – Sports Edition and, most recently, I Can Work in Sports, released in March 2025.
His latest book, created in collaboration with the Detroit Pistons, shines a spotlight on careers in basketball beyond the court. George took his research to the next level, interviewing every professional featured in the book – including the Pistons’ President of Business Operations and President of Basketball Operations.

A Young Leader with a Big Impact
George’s accomplishments have earned him widespread recognition, including the Spirit of Detroit Award, the President’s Volunteer Service Award (Gold Level), and the 2023 “Do the Right Thing” Honoree title from the Urban League of Detroit & Southeastern Michigan. He is also a featured partner author with Literacy for Kids and an active member of Brilliant Detroit, both of which support literacy and education initiatives.
Now a fourth grader, George has been part of the JDA community since kindergarten. When asked what he loves most about his school, he doesn’t hesitate: “The curriculum, my friends, and the love and support I get from all of the teachers and administration.”
“George’s passion for writing and creativity serves as an inspiration to his peers and the entire school community,” said Principal Monica Thompson. “The partnership with the renowned Detroit Pistons highlights the importance of teamwork, perseverance, and dedication.”
Sharing His Story and Inspiring Others
Like any dedicated author, George embarks on book tours with each new release, visiting all four Cornerstone elementary schools and other area schools. His goal? To inspire young students with his message of entrepreneurship, hard work, and believing in yourself.
“It’s always fun to visit the other Cornerstone schools,” George says. “I love seeing the other kids because they always remember me, and they’re always nice and excited to see me.”
His book tour provided a rare opportunity for students to engage with a published young author and learn about the writing process. “We recognize the importance of fostering a love for reading and writing among our students, and we commend George for his remarkable accomplishments at such a young age,” added Ms. Thompson.
What’s next for this busy 10 year old? George has his eyes set on writing a chapter book. We’ll be signing up for an advanced copy.
